Measurement Requirements for Buying Curtains Online
Curtains are a type of window treatment that you can use for decoration and privacy for your home. To find styles of curtains online to fit windows in your home requires taking measurements. You also need to have knowledge of the difference between curtains and drapes. Determining the type and style of the curtains will also require obtaining the total size needed to cover your windows.
Curtain vs Drapes
Make sure that you know the difference between curtains and drapes, as these are often used to refer to the same window treatment. Drapes typically hang closer to the floor than curtains. They are also made of a heavier material such as cotton and are used for decoration. Curtains are designed to cover the size of the window and are made from a lighter material. You can use drapes to cover your windows during the winter months and curtains during the warmer months of the year.
Curtain Types
Search for curtains online to determine the type that you want to purchase. Curtains come in two types that are a pinch pleat or a rod pocket panel. A pinched pleat curtain has pleats across the top and hangs on a rod by using pin hooks. Rod pocket curtains have a rod that is placed into an opening at the top of the curtain. You need to push the curtain material over the rod and then set the rod on the brackets. The material can be spread along the rod until you are satisfied with the placement.
Number of Panels
Determine from images online how many panels that you want for your curtains. You can choose from a single panel solution or a pair of panels. If you choose a single panel solution, the curtain can only be drawn to one side of your window. When a pair of panels is chosen you can draw one or both panels to one side of the window. To do this you will need to attach fabric hooks onto each side of the window.
Calculate Curtain Width
Measure the width of the window plus the window trim by using a tape measure. The curtain will need to cover the entire area of your window plus the surrounding trim. Multiply this measurement by 2.5 if you plan to use a rod pocket type of window to create a full looking design. Make sure when you view curtains online that the total width of the material matches your measurement.
Calculate Curtain Length
Determine where you want the curtains to fall below the bottom of your window. Measure the length of the window from 4 inches above the top of your window to this spot. Make sure you allow at least ½ an inch for clearance at the windowsill.
