Change your Lifestyle by Building a Home Office

Guest article by Rob Stone

The world is changing and over time more and more people are choosing to work from home to improve their work life balance. There are a number of benefits to working from home which are proving to be all to alluring too many. While the working world becomes ever faster paced those in the know are taking a step back and beginning to work on their terms. The benefits far outweigh the downside of this latest work phenomenon. For those with the right job and some spare space at home it is the only choice but exactly how do you start working from home.

The first thing to think about is the pros and cons to working at home. There is no point in setting up a home office only to find out it doesn’t work or you do not like it. The benefits are that it saves you travelling time and money which gives you greater flexibility in your lifestyle. It will help you stay a lot more stress free even if just from the travelling alone. The down side is that you do not get to interact with other people which can make things a little harder and long winded.

Once you have decided you definitely want to go for it you will need a bit of space to turn into an office. This can be easy especially if you are living in a newly built home. These often have box rooms that are described by estate agents as bedrooms when in fact you can hardly fit a bed in there. If you manage it you won’t manage anything else. It is these rooms that are the best for a home office although any spare room is fine. It should be somewhere away from normal home life such as the television as concentration is vital.

So once in your box room it is important to set it up just as you need to work as efficiently as possible. I am a fan of getting someone in to build you a bespoke work space. This is generally more expensive as it involves a skilled person to install it. A cheaper option is to find the right desk and furniture to fill the space you have. Obviously this also depends on what you need. If you have a laptop you may not need as much space. It is recommended that you have enough room for your computer, monitor, printer and some extra desk space. You should also make sure that the carpet and wall colours are the right colours for you. The wrong colour can change your mood especially when in an enclosed area.

Now if you do have a box room then ever inch is going to count. Shelves could be one of the best space saving ideas especially if you can make them deep enough for level arch files. An alternative is a mini filing cabinet or drawers under part of the desk. It is vital in small areas that every inch is used to its fullest. If you use a swivel chair you can have that at the centre of the room allowing you to position furniture around you. You will then simply need to turn around to access files and paperwork. This is not such a problem if you are using a space room where you have far more space.

Ultimately if you are able to work from home and you have the space to do so it is important to give careful thought to what you need and want. You will spend a large amount of time in this space so need to make sure that every detail is done. The interior design of this room from the colour to functionality needs to be planned well. Once it is done so you will be able to work efficiently which will ultimately improve your overall work life balance.
